To be a good teacher , you need some of the gifts of a good actor:you must be able to 26
the attention and interest of your students, you must be a 27 speaker, with a
good, strong, 28 voice whichis fully under your control ; and yoou must be able to 29
what you are teaching , in order to make its meaning clear. 30 a good teacher, and
you will see that he does not sit still 31 his class: he 32 the whole time
he is teaching ; he walks about , using his 33 , hands and fingers to help him in
his explanations, and his face to express 34 . Listen to him , and you will 35
the loudness, the quality and the musical note of his voice always 36 according to
what he is 37 about. the fact that a good teacher has some of the gifts of a good
actor doesn't 38 that he will indeed be able to act 39 on the stage , for
there are very important 40 between the teacher's work and the actor's . The 41
has to speak words which he has learnt by heart; he has to repeat exactly the 42
words each time he plays a certain part; 43 his movements and the ways in which he
uses his voice are usually 44 beforehand. What he has to do is to make all these
carefully learnt words and actions seem 45 on the stage.A good teacher 46 in
quite a different way. His students take an active part in his 47: they ask
and if they don't 48 something; they say so. The teacher therefore has to
suit his act to the needs of his students , which is in his class. He cannot learn his
part by heart , but must 49 it as he goes along. I have known many teachers who
were fine 50 in class but unble to take part in a stage-play because
their brains wouldn't keep discipline :they could not keep strictly to what another had
written.

The news report that night was about a famine in Ethiopia. The pictures were of people who
were so thin that they looked like beings from another planet. The camera focused on one
man so that he looked directly at me , sitting in my comfortable living room . All around
was the sound of death. It was clear that the world had not noticed this until now. You
could hear the sadness in the voice of the reporter, Michael Buerk . At the end of
the report he was silent. Paula started crying. the rushed upstairs to check our baby ,
Fifi, who was sleeping peacefully.
I kept seeing the news pictures in my mind . What could I do? I ws only a popsinger--and
by now not a very successful pop singer. All I could do was to make records which no one
bought . But I would do that I would give all the profits of the next Rats record to
Oxfam(an organization in Britain which helps poor people around the world ). What
good would that do ? It would only be a little money but it was more than I could
give just from my bank account. Maybe some people would buy it because the profits
wrer for Oxfam . And I would be protesting about this disaster. But that was not enough.
